Entertaining, Sincere, Funny and Genuine!
Jay Leno has let us into his life thru this book. The good times, funny times, trying times and truly personal times. He's as entertaining on paper as he is in person! I have learned to like Jay Leno and enjoy his style of comedy. It took me a while, but this book actually put the finishing touches on my feelings. A really good book, full of fun, laughs, thoughfulness and honesty. Easy to read and most enjoyable. Get to know Jay

He was hilarious!
I don't watch Leno, nor do I really care for his style of humor, but his book was absolutely hilarious! I would read in bed and laugh out loud every few minutes and my husband would say"It can't be THAT funny!" It was. The most entertainment from a book I've had in a long time. That's because my genre is historical or cultural. This was a nice change and well worth it

the hardest working, nicest, most talented man in show busine
jay, this is the best book i have ever read, it truly is! it has everything that a reader could possibly want in a book. his stories are so heartwarming, that most people including me can relate to. his stories are told from jay's heart, with love to all of his fans. i had a chance of meeting jay back in 1996, the nicest person! He really does care about his fans. i personally think, jay is the funniest person i have ever heard. his comedy is brilliant, other people prefer letterman, or carson's comedy, the more classic, more goaled to the older generation of people. leno, truly has a brilliant, magnificent mind, in the way he does his show every single night of the week, and shows his care for his fans, i will tell you about a recent example, this past thursday night, he did a show in the dark, to help save energy, i know this may not sound like a big deal to most people, but this is just another example, of how nice, and generous he is. i always wish, that i knew him better, like a best friend, he has all the great qualities that i would want in a person, his wife is very lucky!! jay i have been watching you every night, keep up the great work. i hope you never retire, you are truly a genuis at what you do!! hope you have a peaceful and joyful life. godbless. p.s. my birthday is april 28 too, but in the year 1970.

When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: A Vietnamese Woman's Journey from War to Peace
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (April, 1989)
Authors: Le Ly Hayslip, Joy Wurts, and Jay Wurts
Average review score:

A Wonderful, Touching, and Informative Read
I thoroughly enjoyed Le Ly Hayslip's account of her Vietnam War experience. Hayslip presents her story in a way that does not invoke sympathy from the reader; the story instead represents a call for action from the reader. Hayslip story is the heroic journey of a Vietnamese girl, and she effectively presents the numerous dimensions of the war in ways that relate to both Americans and Vietnamese Americans. I recommend Hayslip's novel to anyone wishing to learn more about this war and specifically any student of American history or culture. This story has the ability to bridge the gaps opened by the Vietnam War that have yet to be closed.

Truth about the Vietnam War
I read this book because it was assigned for an English class. Half way through the book, I hated it because it was too brutal and unsettling for somebody who knew nothing about the Vietnam War. It's hard to believe how anyone could have experienced, and yet endured all that Le Ly went through. I didn't appreciate reading about the gory and cruel details that she experienced, but after reading half way through the book, I couldn't put it down either. In the end, I really learned something about the war that most of the younger generations today never learned.. and even if we did, it was probably from the grotesquely portrayed account by Hollywood films.

This is a good book, and I have learned something truly valuable. I will never think of Vietnam war or Veterans day the same way I did before I read this book.

A War That's Not Over
"Le Ly Hayslip had always been in-between south and north, east and west, peace and war, Vietnam and America. It has been her life and fate to be in-between Heaven and Earth." When Heaven and Earth Changed Places is a story of a woman from a small village in Vietnam called Ky La. The author, Le Ly Hayslip, is just another victim of the Vietnam War. The brutality of the war created separation in her family, destruction of an individual, and distrust among formerly warm-hearted neighbors. She was born the youngest of six children in a close-knit Buddhist family. Throughout her childhood, the peace breaks into pieces due to the war. Le Ly, as a little girl, serves the Viet Cong fighters, and she is honored for courageously surviving tortures in prison when captured by the government. The book focuses on the individual¡¯s emotional and physical outcomes caused by the war. If one wants to know the reality of what the effects of the war are, this book is definitely recommended. As an Asian, I was attracted to the story of the life of this Vietnamese woman. As I read, I found there was something very extraordinary about her life that stirred my emotions. To the public, this story is well known through the movie, "Heaven and Earth." As the movie was enjoyed by numerous moviegoers, the book will be appreciated by people of all ages, especially those who are interested in the Vietnam War.

Guerrilla Marketing for Writers : 100 Weapons to Help You Sell Your Work
Published in Paperback by Writers Digest Books (October, 2000)
Authors: Jay Conrad Levinson, Rick Frishman, and Michael Larsen
Average review score:

Whether You Sell out to a Publisher . . .
or publish yourself, the author must do the Promotion. It is a sad
fact of publishing life: publishers do not promote books. They only
produce them and place them in bookstores. Fortunately, now there is a
Guerrilla Marketing book for those who need it the most-the
writer.

These three marketing geniuses help you assess your
strengths, arm you with the tools you will need, show you how to
promote your book and generously share their years of experience
marketing books. This book is brimming with every conceivable book
marketing and promotion idea. Some are expensive and some are
free. Some are hard and some are easy. Some require you to personally
flog your own book and some are remote and anonymous. Enlist now and
requisition your weapons. Don't go into the publishing jungle
unarmed.

As a publisher and an author of 113 books (including
revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine
articles, I highly recommend this book to both authors and publishers.

Pleasent Surprise and Very Helpful
As a writer on my fourth book this was a pleasent surprise. I had read some of the authors other works and the original ones were helpful but the later ones were getting redundent. If you want some practical tips on promoting your writing then this is the book for you. Not much hype, more practical things you can go out and do. And every Author knows or should know they need to be half writer and half promoter and this book is an excellent foundation for that. It is also very inspirational. Worth checking out. You can be a great writer but if you dont promote it you have nothing. This book gives you a solid start if you go and do it.

Required reading for authors
As the author of 24 books which enjoy a worldwide circulation in excess of a million and a half copies and whose books have been translated into 37 languages, I recommend Guerilla Marketing for Writers to any author who aspires to success. If this book had existed twelve years ago, my income would be several times what it is today. I would have avoided numerous expensive mistakes because I would have more realistic expectations of who should do what in publishing. Guerilla Marketing for Writers presents an insider's view of what really goes on in publishing and outlines over one hundred specific, affordable and practical ways authors can promote their book and leverage of its success.

Guerilla Marketing for Writers presents a doable tutorial that will help every author who adopts even just a few of its ideas. It's message won't be appreciated by those who feel "marketing should be left for publishers" but will be appreciated by authors who respect their work enough to want to promote their book to its maximum potential. Just one of the ideas in this book can lead to a more profitable future. For over twenty years, Jay Conrad Levinson has been helping small businesses in general promote themselves to greater success. Now, authors can benefit from his and his co-author's wisdom adapted to their specific needs. If you want to write a book, begin by reading this book (as well as Michael Larsen's How To Write a Book Proposal).

The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide
Published in Hardcover by Basic Books (September, 1986)
Author: Robert Jay Lifton
Average review score:

EXCELLENT!!!!
Written by a Jewish psychologist, this book should be required reading for anyone interested in Nazi Germany. Lifton explains the psychology behind the Nazi directives - how Hitler was able to convince a nation that it was Ok to exterminate millions of people with the stamp of approval by medical doctors. Of course, these doctors have their own stories - some performed horrible experiments on their concentration camp test subjects, some were Jewish doctors trying to minimize the pain of these experiments. The pages are filled with facts, personal stories, psychological commentary, and an insightful overview of the implementation of the Final Solution. This book clearly shows how this tragedy occurred and how truly close we are to having it occur again. It is not an easy read because it will make you think and make you feel...and hopefully, make you change.

Must read for those concerned with bioethics!
When I read The Origins of Nazi Genocide, which came out in 1995, the author referred to this original book concerning the physicians and scientists who had exploited the 'situation' in Germany to their own ends. I had also come across references to this book in many, many professional papers...yet, made the stupid decision that I didn't need to read it. I finally decided I had to read this when my advisor in science education recommended it because he was using it in teaching bioethics to science teachers.

Though Friedlander's book is excellent, and was my introduction to The Medical Holocaust (especially as concerned the disabled) Lifton's book goes much further and deals with the physician/scientists within the concentration camps as well as in the psychiatric institutions which became involved in the killing machinery of the Nazis. Lifton's book explores the rationalizations made by these men to take advantage of a situation to experiment on those who could not give informed consent. Though Lifton tends to make a few speculations concerning motives from his interviews with physicians who were not prosecuted or were absolved of their involvement in these camps...his speculations are on target (mostly) and he backs up his statements with the words of these doctors from letters and interviews with those people who had the most to do with them: the prisoner physicians forced to work in these environments not only to save their own lives, but the lives of so many others.

Of course, more information is in this book concerning the atrocities. Sometimes, I had to put the book down and leave it for a while because the information is so horrendous. It is so beyond belief that so many physicians could rationalize the experimentation, using a statement I've grown to recognize in legal documents and even in newspapers in the U.S. ('for the good of society'). I just cringe now when I see this or sentences like this. Science should never replace the rights of the individuals. And scientists are never objective...they have the same prejudices and biases that society has and it permeates their work...to the point of biasing the information they find.

My only complaint about Lifton's book is occasional repetition or dwelling on certain topics/agendas. Sometimes, it seemed as if I had just reread the same pages, but Lifton was trying to make a point in most of these cases, or make a case for what he was saying...

The need to teach ethics in all fields of endeavors, including medicine and research science is all the more important today. If we don't, the work of Lifton and FRiedlander to remind the world of the horrors of The MEdical Holocaust will have been in vain. The slippery slope is growing with advanced technology, genomics, cloning, and stem cell use, without the accompanying legal protections. The Nuremberg Code, etched into the history of mankind in 1947, seems to have been forgotten.

To remind your students of the need for morals and ethics within all fields, this book is a necessary addition for required reading. I will certainly make it required for those I work with....

Very Fair Author
Mr. Lifton is amazingly fair in trying to view the action of the Nazi doctors from their point of view. I was very impressed with his fairness. This is one of the first books on the holocaust that I read and it made my mind hungry for more information. It answered alot of my first questions about the holocaust in the first of the book. How they came to have such power to kill based only upon race. Then he goes on to speak of the doctors personaly; giving some background information on them and what "function" they performed in the consentration camps, along with some stories about them. It was a great read and now I am less ignorant of what happened during the holocaust.

The Milk Mustache Book: A Behind-The-Scenes Look at America's Favorite Advertising Campaign
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (October, 1998)
Authors: Jay Schulberg, Bernie Hogya, and Sal Taibi
Average review score:

A much-awaited treat!
As an avid milk mustache collector, seeing this book in bookstores the first time was an incredible surprise. I was thrilled that I could finally have a collection of all the milk mustache ads I have enjoyed for so long. I especially love how they included different poses that were not used in the final ads. My only complaint is that a few ads I know of were not included in the book, and that they could have included a bit more actual info and background. But for any milk mustache ad collector, this is the book you have been waiting for! :-)

Amazing for milk ad collectors
The Milk Mustache Book offers fun facts, behind-the-scenes photos, and we can't forget the 100+ ads themselves! Even ads printed once are included, but many of the recent ads are not included (ie: Backstreet Boys, Rebecca Romajn-Stamos, Melanie Griffith, Garfield, Mark McGuire, etc.)

Got Milk? Get this book.
The Milk Mustache ad campaign is arguably the most popular in American history and although I don't see them in magazines as ads in Australia, they're often made into posters as consolation!! :)

This book features all of the great milk ads produced as well as background info on the person, just so you're not going "what? who the hell is that?!". It features info on why and how the campaign was started, how exactly they do those mustaches and interesting little snippets on the dramas on the photo shoots. All this, as well as full page, colour photos of the milk ads.

The only con is that this book was made a while ago and so a lot of the more recent ads are missing, but this books is still worth buying for any interested fan!!

Bring on the next book!!

The Elephant Vanishes: Stories
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (March, 1993)
Authors: Haruki Murakami and Jay Rubin
Average review score:

Japan, with fries.
A fabulous, if a bit uneven collection of stories from one of the modern masters of fiction. The first story, "The Wind-Up Bird..." is the first chapter from his spectacular novel, "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles." All the characters in these stories are vaguely cynical, listless inhabitants of postmodern Tokyo - the city, as well as its people, are cosmopolitan and hyper-westernized, and many of the stories deal with discomforting lack of certainty and stability of the existence in such a world. People disappear, monsters plead for love, and real people act/talk as though they were characters in jaded fables. You might think Murakami's doing a version of magic realism, but he's more sly than that: no matter how fabulous events seem to be, the characters, the exacting details of the events, the dead-on metaphors/themes ground all the stories firmly to reality. The stories are a blast to read as well. When a hungry couple pulls a heist of a McDonald's and steal 20 big-macs, they politely pay for their two drinks and walk out. ("Bakery Attack") Trust me. You have to read it.

THE SUBTERRAIN OF PROSE
An untouchable mystery of thought, madness, and equally unexplained sadness -- such is the gloomy psychological landscape in which Murakami typically sets his intriguing narratives. All those deliciously subcutaneous elements of prose are as evident in this collection of over a dozen stories as in any of his longer novels.

Geographically, many of them are based in Tokyo, but it might be any of the world's vast unforgiving cities where people get lost like tears in the rain and finding love is sometimes as hard as solving Rubik's cube in the dark. Reading Murakami is an unsettling, disorienting experience that can leave you feeling rather empty, but always somehow thoughtful.

Minor gripe: my favorite translator of Murakami's work is Jay Rubin and I am certain that under his watchful pen the stories would have more closely resembled the verve of their originals (in Japanese).

Nonetheless, if you have never read Murakami before, this marvellous collection is a great way to start in manageable dollops of his style. And if you are familiar with the author's dour tracts, this book should be an unmissable little something to relish on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Bizzare and obscure, so what!?
I'm a big fan of Murakami's, but I love his short stories much better than his novels. it is the book you have to read to feel great to live on this planet with Murakami.some people say he is too American and his stories dont make any sense. why does a story have to make a sense? this life doesnt make any sense sometimes. I think his cute, little but deep and touching stories can touch your soul. They are strange, but beatiful. In some stories it is impossible to happen in your life time. but we can dream and imagine whatever we want. Call him a dreamer, and sentimentalist, but so are you.

Small-Circle Jujitsu
Published in Paperback by Black Belt Communications, Inc. (August, 1989)
Authors: Wally Jay, Doug Churchill, and Mike Lee
Average review score:

Excellent Instructor! Marginal Book
No book could ever hope to be capable enough to deliver the knowledge and expertise that Professor Wally Jay holds. This book is marginal at best at attempting to impart the knowledge of such an expert as Wally Jay. The book is published in a style popular in the 1970's by karate publications, in that it is presented via numerous black & white photos demonstrating techniques. The book is an acceptable text to those individuals who are already acquainted with Jujitsu and its concepts, for the novice it is somewhat more difficult to comprehend the techniques. I have attended seminars presented by Prof. Jay and know him to be one of the best martial artist living today and a great instructor with a hell of a personality. Maybe, thats why I am some what disappointed with the quality of the book, there are much better books available to those interested in martial arts, jujitsu, or self defense than this one. If you are a student of small circle jujitsu then you should own this book. I hope someday soon another more informative book is published by this truely talented and gifted instructor

A must read for all martial artist
This book should be a part of every martial artist's library. I bought it several years ago and have reviewed it several times. The techniques are practical and efficient. It really doesn't matter what style you train in, the fundamentals of this book can enhance any style. If you are a current Jujitsu or Judo student or technician, this book take techniques you may already know and increases their effectiveness. It is truly amazing what a difference a degree or two and a little push-pull action can make in a traditional technique. Wally Jay has made a wonderful contribution to the martial arts world by writing and putting this book together and sharing his years of study and research with the rest of us.

A simple twist of the wrist can subdue a stronger opponent
Wally Jay is an original, as well as a Hall of Fame martial arts instructor. This book must be one of the 5 or 10 best martial arts books available. It includes 11 wrist locks, 7 finger locks, 10 arm locks, 5 leg locks, 17 throws, 11 chokes, and 45 self defense moves against strikes, chokes, body grabs, wrist grabs, and arm bars. The step by step explanations are clear, and the large photos are helpful. All you need is a willing partner and you are well on your way to learning Wally Jay's awesome fighting system based on a simple twist of the wrist.

Unix Shell Programming
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (September, 1990)
Author: Lowell Jay Arthur
Average review score:

No depth, good only for beginners
This book is good only for beginners. If you have scripting skills in another OS and want to learn UNIX shell programming to do real life scripting, this book will only give you cursory knowledge. It does not cover any useful scripting techniques. Overall, I would say you will need another book alongwith this to do what you want to do.

Great bourne shell book
I have purchased this book several times. That is because I keep giving it away to friends. It is the best basic bourne shell programming book I've come accross in 10+ years of Unix admin.
Most other books tend to focus on Ksh or Csh or some facsimile. This one I always keep at my desk for quick sh reference and fine examples.

Classic Shell Script Programming Introduction
About 10 years ago, I bought a copy of this book, because it was the required textbook for a course entitled "Introduction to Unix Shell Script Programming". In the intervening years, I lost my original copy (actually think it was swiped by a co-worker).

Occasionally, I've missed not having my copy of the "Kochan & Wood" book at hand, especialy when I needed a reminder of how do some little thing in Shell quickly. (I find O'Reilly's "llama" Perl book of similar value as a Perl quick reference.) Anyway, I am glad I finally took the time to shop around and find a mint condition replacement!

A quick review of my new copy tells me why I always missed it. It's a well-written, down to earth, and comprehensive overview of Shell....and is especially valuable for those who are new to Unix/Linux/BSD/OSX etc. For the "old timers", it's a nice, nostalgic, but still relevant, memory-jogger.

Nasty People
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (05 May, 2003)
Author: Jay Carter
Average review score:

Who Might Invalidate This Book?
Yes, I am the author of this book. I have no axe to grind. No ego to protect. No royalties to protect. This book is over twelve years old and still selling. I have received thousands of letters and I have read every one. To date there were 3563 good letters, and three bad ones. Am I reviewing my own book? No. Hell. It is only good if people THINK it is. I am reviewing ... my reviews. Based on some of these reviews, it seems my book has ticked off a couple people. I may have offended "Invalidators" by making them psychologically naked and vulnerable. I think I might write a ... kinder-gentler book if I wrote it today. I feel badly that some reviewers took offense. "Invalidators" are who they are because someone ALREADY beat them down. Even so, I have no regrets for writing this book, which has now been read by over 3/4 million people. Am I saying that only an invalidator would criticize my book? Absolutely not. You judge that for yourself based on the review and the conflicting reviews.
But if someone is controlling and suppressive to their mate, and that mate happens to read my book, and takes the next bus out of town ... it wasn't my BOOK that is to blame. I say this to be truthful, not to be "right" about it. And yes, my book makes a person feel much better by identifying the source of the problem, AND could use more concrete solutions as the Dr. from Wales so honestly noted. Maybe it's time for a revised edition. I have learned more in the last 12 years.
Thank you for reading my review of the reviews.

Dr. Jay

I have given away at least 25 copies of this book
For months, I have meant to write a review for Mr. Carter. I just gave away my last two books and have to order again. This book has helped me with step children, co-workers in a volunteer organization where you wouldn't typically think Nasty People reside, my husband who came from a manipulative family, neighbors who are nosey, and a sister-in-law who is definitely a Nasty Person.

I can just laugh and totally brush off their little stabs. Like Jay says, just totally take it out to the trash. Also, Jay teaches you how to recognize injury when you aren't really sure what happened or are momentarily confused.

This book will keep you in good health. People have told me that they wish they had had this book their whole life. It gives you the tools to deal with people who usually make you cringe. And, happily, THEY are the ones who are confused when you are "on to them" and they know that they can't hurt you anymore. It is fun.

The perfect gift for selected poeple.
This is the perfect gift to help others cope with the Nasty People in their lives. Mr. Carter's text is simple, clear and direct. The information is entertaining and valuable. Mr. Carter supplies the reader with new insights and effective tools for dealing with a 'Nasty'.

I have purchased many copies over the years and simply save them until I encounter a distressed victim of a 'Nasty.' Recently I gave a copy to a college professor who loved it.

Many thanks to Mr. Carter for his efforts and to Amazon for making this book availiable.
